Praying in the Spirit

Updated on August 31, 2015

What does it mean to pray in the Spirit?

Praying in the Spirit is having a fully committed intimate personal relationship with God. One of the ways you pray in the spirit is through the Holy Spirit using an unknown language known as Tongues, This is a prayer language, and it allows us to communicate with God on a deeper spiritual level.

A person has a mind, body, and spirit. You are a spirit who lives in a body, and uses your mind to make decisions.

1. Your Mind is your intellect-reasoning, it is your will.

2. Your Body is your flesh

3. Your Spirit is your inner man

When God made man He said "let us (referring to the Trinity-Father, Son, & Holy Ghost) make man in our image (Genesis 1:26...) The bible told us that God is a Spirit and those that worship (serve) Him, must do it in Spirit and truth. John 4:24 He is spirit and truth, you can't do it no other way.

The only way one can pray in the spirit is if the Holy Spirit is praying with you. The only way you can have the Holy Spirit is by receiving Jesus as your Lord. You must be born again. How do you be born again you might ask? Simple all it takes is for you to Believe in Jesus, and renounce your sins (Satan, world, and Flesh.) Do this by 1. Confessing verbally out loud your sins, 2. Acknowledgement of Him-that Jesus is the son of God who came into the world, died, and raised from the dead (Death, Burial, and Resurrection). Then ask for forgiveness of your sins (Repentance) and invite Jesus to come in to your heart as your Lord and Savoir. Receive your (Deliverance) you now have a new life in Jesus Christ. This is spiritual birth that we as Christians refers to as being "born again." Romans 10:9-10

The Holy Spirit is now our prayer partner. He knowing all things makes intercession for each of us by praying to God on our behalf. Romans 8:26 "Likewise the spirit also help our infirmities: for we know not what to pray for as we ought; but the spirit himself make intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered." The Holy Spirit knows the mind of God, and He knows the will of God; we on our own does not. We can discover God's will through the reading of his word, but it takes the Holy Spirit to gives us understanding of that word, and he does this through revelation (personal meaning of the matter.)

Praying in the spirit is associated with praying in tongues.

What is Tongues?

Tongues is a spiritual gift from God, it is a heavenly Supernatural prayer language that is giving to an individual who receive the baptism or infilling of the Holy Spirit. Acts 2:4 "And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the spirit gave them utterance." This prayer language is use to glorify and magnify God, its our worship towards Him. No human can understand what is being said, it is a private conversation between you and God. The Holy Spirit can give us the interpretation when needed 1st Corinthians 14;14 states "if I pray in an unknown tongue, my spirit prayeth, but my understanding is unfruitful"). Unknown tongues is an individual own personal prayer language with God, which is interpret by God and and its meant to bring edification (upliftment and enlightenment or understanding) to the person praying.(1Corinthians 14:2 & 4) " he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him;" "he that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself". The more you speak in your prayer language is the more you build yourself up in the spirit, and God reveals things to you.

. Have you ever been in a room with many people and hearing them all speaking in tongues at once? It sounds like jibberish to the natural ears, but to God it is a delightful sound; He understand it all. That is so remarkable, but that's why He's God. When you hear someone say let's pray in the spirit they are talking about praying in your individual prayer language. Be aware that someone can be praying in the spirit but they actually might not be in the spirit at the time they are praying. Have I confused you? Let me try and clarify:

I can be praying in tongues and my mind will be wondering on different things, such as what am i going to have for dinner. Your thoughts is now distracting you away from the presence of God and what you are to be doing, which is focusing on God as you speak to Him. Your mind is now preoccupied with worldly concerns rather than spiritual concerns. This means you are operating in the realm of the flesh/natural where Satan has your attention rather than God. To be fully in the spirit there must be a reverence of God, your mind and focus has to be totally on Him in the realm of the supernatural where He resides. Your full attention is required, focusing our mind is sometimes difficult, but it is a discipline we must attain in order to have full fellowship and intimacy with our Father.

Praying with the power of God

The Holy Spirit is the power of God, the third person of the trinity (Father, Son, Holy Spirit) He is the one that intercede in prayer with the father, and will reveal all truth to you. When you come before the Lord in prayer we must be in the spirit of reverence and expect to receive from God. When you pray in the spirit you surrender and yield full control to the Holy Spirit, this means your will and your itemize list of wants, desire and complaints has to go out the window. The Holy Spirit is in charge and he prays the will of God for your life. Romans 8:26 "Likewise the spirit also help our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought, but the spirit itself make intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered." On our own we tend to pray ineffective prayers because the flesh don't know the things of the spirit, so the majority of the times our prayers goes un-answered.

To pray with power in the spirit is praying the word of God. Praying God's written word back to Him is powerful, and it gets results from God, He loves when you remind Him of His promises in His words Hebrews 6:13 "For when God made a promise to Abraham, since He had no one greater to swear by, He swore by Himself." God has no other choice but to respond to His word for He is not a man that He should lie, He cannot lie because He is Truth. Reminding God of His word puts a demand on Him to respond according to what He had said, so you should have every confidence of the end result. To pray in the spirit you have to know what God's word says and the requirement needed in order to get your specific result.

Do not think that you can come to God the Almighty in any and any way, and read back His word to Him and expect favorable result, your life has to be reflective of Him. John 15:7 "If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, you shall ask what you want and it shall be done unto you." to abide with Him means to dwell in Him you live for Him always and that means living and eating His holy words, and having a fervent prayer life to be in constant communication with Him. You have to read the word of God to know His promises, declarations and principles in order for them to work for you. For example Proverbs 3:5-6 says"Trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your path." Their are three requirements in this verse that you have to adhere to before the promise can be fulfilled:

1. You have to trust God with your entire being, all of your heart 2. Do not rely on your own understanding or ability 3.Acknowledge God in everything you do with praise, thanksgiving, and worship. He then will keep His word; He's Faithful. Trusting God and taking Him at His word is a spiritual lifestyle, in order to live this lifestyle you must be committed, obedient, and have faith. God is not to be taken lightly, He's not someone you take for granted thinking you can turn Him on and off at your whim, or when it is convenient to you, or when you feel like it, or when you want something from Him. No God do not deal like that. Would you go before a natural king in any fashion and speak any and any way, I don't think so! there are rules and protocols, so it is with the KING of Kings, our Creator of heaven and earth of of all of us.
